Beneath the twinkling canopy of stars over the Torres Strait, a majestic green turtle makes her way back to her birthplace. As the nesting season commences, these ancient creatures return to lay their eggs, heralding the arrival of a new generation of hatchlings. Among them will be our tiny protagonist, Migi, ready to embark on her own adventure.

Bangarra Dance Theatre presents its inaugural production tailored specifically for young audiences. "Waru - journey of the small turtle" invites children aged 3-7 to follow Migi's thrilling quest for survival and self-discovery. This captivating performance draws inspiration from the Torres Strait Islander totemic system of the green turtle, offering an engaging and hands-on introduction to the rich cultural heritage and dance traditions of the region.

This enchanting production is the result of a collaborative effort between former Bangarra Artistic Director Stephen Page, Hunter Page-Lochard, and Bangarra alumni Sani Townson and Elma Kris. "Waru" serves as a powerful educational tool, allowing educators, parents, and caregivers to initiate meaningful discussions about pressing issues such as climate change and environmental stewardship. Additionally, it provides a platform to explore traditional cultural values, emphasizing the importance of respect and mutual support within communities.

The creative team drew partial inspiration from the 2001 "Corroboree" piece titled "Turtle," which was choreographed by Stephen Page, Peggy Misi, and Elma Kris. This new adaptation brings the timeless story of the sea turtle to life for a new generation of young audiences.
